An untitled film (otherwise known as Spider-Man 3) based on Spider-Man. The film is a soft reboot of the series following Marvel Cinematic Universe's 2017–2019 Spider-Man duology, and the fourth installment in Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters, and while Tom Holland still portrays Spider-Man, any precieved connection to the previous two films is vague. It is slated for release on December 17, 2021, having been pushed back a year from its original date (November 2021) as a result of multiple film delays.

Spider-Man 3 is set to be filmed back to back with Spider-Man 4 in early 2020.

Production history

Tom Holland was confirmed to be contracted to star in two additional films, while Far From Home writers Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers had already begun work on the screenplay for a third film. In September, Vinciquerra confirmed that Spider-Man would be integrated with Sony's MU moving forward. In November 2019, Holland confirmed that his third Spider-Man film would be unconnected to the broader MCU, but that the events of Homecoming and Far from Home still occurred in some capacity.

It was also announced that the film was scheduled for release on July 16, 2021.

Rebecca Ferguson was cast to replace Emma Watson in talks for the role of Jill Stacy.

On January 16, 2020, it was reported that the film is expected to begin production in July and run through November in Atlanta, New York, Los Angeles, and Iceland, under the working title "Serenity Now".[2][3]

On March 30, 2020, Discussing Film reported that Seamus McGarvey had joined the film as the cinematographer.[4]

On March 31, 2020, the British Film Institute reported that the production of the film had been paused due to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.[5]

Trivia

  • It is implied the film at least nominally connected with Homecoming and Far from Home, with the events of this film having happened in some aspect. It was confirmed, however, to be a split timeline from the MCU proper, where the events of Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame did not occur and no mention of Peter's association with Iron Man or the Avengers is made. It is confirmed though that the person who framed Peter for murder was indeed Mysterio.
  • Unlike the previous films, save for Cindy Moon, none of his classmates from the MCU films appear or are mentioned.
  • SUMC versions of Harry Osborn and Mary Jane Watson will debut in this movie.
  • This film will have a darker tone than the two MCU films, as promised by director James Mangold.
  • Rumors are this version of Spider-Man will die in this film.
  • One rumor claims Andrew Garfield will make an appearance as his version of Peter Parker, having ended up in the dimension of these films due to interdimensional circumstances, similar to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
  • Tom Hardy has expressed interest in playing Eddie Brock and Venom in the movie, be it cameo or supporting role.
  • Tiffany Espensen has been confirmed to reprise her role as Cindy Moon from the MCU films, with the implication that this film will set up her own film.
