Production History

On March 15, 2014, Marc Webb told The Daily Beast in an interview that he won't be directing the fourth film but would be involved as a consultant for the film.[1]

Later that month, Webb talked to E! Online stating there's a possibility on seeing Jessica Drew/Spider-Woman in a future film.[2]

On April 16, 2014, Den of Geek reported that the Spider Slayers and Black Cat are lined up for future films.[3]

On September 15, 2015, Angelina Jolie was confirmed to be in talks for the main role in the movie, previous revealed to be Jessica Drew/Spider-Woman.

In February 2018, prior to the release of The Amazing Spider-Man 3, Andrew Garfield claimed that he would not be interested in returning for a fourth Amazing Spider-Man film, stating (of his participation in the Amazing Spider-Man franchise): "We have ridden that horse as far as we can." However, following negotiations, Garfield relented to reprise his role one final time for the fourth film.

In May 2018, Sony chief executive Matthew Tolmach said: "We're very pleased with the financial performance of The Amazing Spider-Man 3, and we believe it is an ongoing franchise. We're going to do [another one], but we don't have clarity yet on how it should be done." Marc Webb said: "Andrew's kind of really smart, but as I said, kind of really annoying, too much energy. When he would get too rambunctious, I would tell him that for The Amazing Spider-Man 4, Andrew is out and [his son] Asa Butterfield is in … if we continue on this path, it won't be released until 2031 but it will be damn good." Andrew Garfield said that: "Asa is already 20 years old, so he's at that mythological boys age, you know – it's time for his bro-mitzvah. So he's right at that place ... He's ready to test me so he can't come anywhere near my movies right now!"

Webb later stated that his personal choice for the role of the villain is Rami Malek.

Matt Reeves, best know for directing Cloverfield, Let Me In, and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and War for the Planet of the Apes, was selected to direct and co-write the film, and Christopher Drake replacing Hans Zimmer to score. James Vanderbilt would also return to co-write the story and screenplay alongside Reeves and Juliana Bard.

In March 2019, Garfield stated that he may indeed return for the fourth film, saying, "As far as I'm concerned, I've got the best job in the world. I'll keep doing it as long as I still get a kick out of it. If I were to stop doing it, I would miss it terribly."

In May 2019, Sony Pictures has casting call announcement that Andrew Garfield and Matthew McConaughey to return for the fourth film.

The Amazing Spider-Man 4 began filming in October 2021 for August 12, 2022 release. In September of 2019, Sony Pictures' Chairman Tony Vinciquerra confirmed plans to implement Spider-Man into the Sony's MU moving forward.

There were rumors that the third and fourth installment would be shot back-to-back with Rossum as the lead role, which he and Webb denied.
